They say that a little kindness can go a long way.
Yours can stretch from here all the way to Brazil.
The money you donate can transform the lives of people you've never even met. Here's the inspiring story of how an amazing project uses Sport Relief cash to come to the rescue of girls who'd lead astonishingly tough lives.
This is Betania's story...
Betania was always a shy, well behaved girl as she grew up in the slums of Recife, Brazil, in the 1970's.
From the age of nine, she was sexually abused by a succession of her mother's boyfriends.
Her mum never did anything to stop it. She had too many problems of her own to deal with.
By the time Betania was 12 the abuse became too much to bear and she ran away from home, seeking refuge on the anonymous city streets.
She had no money and so, like many other girls, she soon had to sell her body for sex so she didn't starve.
The streets were very violent and dangerous.
“It was horrible to live like this, not knowing if I would be alive the next day but I found it more bearable to be abused by strangers on the streets than being abused at home while my mother stood by and did nothing”
Betania had to hide from the police but, once, they caught her and beat her, breaking her arm and leg.
Like many other street children, she started taking drugs and sniffing glue to escape the horrific reality of her day to day existence.
“I needed drugs to survive that life. I was like an animal, that’s the way I was treated, not like a human being. I didn’t ever think of the future - I didn’t really have one. I just worked on instinct. I had the instinct to survive and did anything to make sure I didn’t die from hunger.”
One night Betania woke up to find that another gang of street children had set fire to her best friend.
She watched him burn to death.
This was how she lived until one day she discovered she was pregnant.
She was just 15 years old.
With nowhere to turn and no-one to ask for help, Betania had finally hit rock bottom.
“I was like a person standing on the brink of the ocean about to dive in and drown”
That’s when Betania was found by Anna – a project worker from an amazing project called Passage House.
Over time, Betania let down her defences and began to trust an adult for the first time in her life.
She moved into accommodation provided by Passage House and weaned herself off the drugs before giving birth to her beautiful daughter.
Now she is a 34 year-old woman with four children, a loving partner and a great job as a teacher.
She still works at Passage House, giving street children the same love and unconditional support that, she believes, saved her life.
“When I see another child coming into the project who has been treated the way I was, I think it is important to give them hope and courage. They will be feeling helpless and guilty and I try to make sure they know it’s not their fault.”
Your money is enabling Passage House to reach out to girls just like Betania.
She is living proof that a little kindness and a lot of spirit can overcome even the greatest of adversity.
Just £30 could pay for Passage House to provide six hours of counselling to a street child who has led an unimaginably tough life - giving them the chance of a much brighter future.
